10 Funniest Guy Ritchie Movies, Ranked (2)

After debuting with 1998's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Guy Ritchie has been consistently putting out movies every couple of years. While the director has made dramatic projects like the fantasy blockbuster King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and the 2023 war movie The Covenant, Ritchie has been primarily known for his comedic and entertaining films. His inclusion of British humor and witty dialogue has made him a distinguishable writer and director.

Guy Ritchie always finds a way to include humorous moments guaranteed to get a laugh or two out of viewers. He has tried his hand at spy adventures, period pieces, and even a live-action remake of a Disney classic. However, Ritchie's impact on the gangster subgenre has generated the most recognition for him, paving the way for his best work. From early projects like Snatch to recent movies like The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, these Guy Ritchie films are considered his funniest.

10 Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is Offbeat Like Its Title

  • IMDB Rating: 6.3
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 51%
  • Watch on Starz

Guy Ritchie had two motion pictures released in 2023. The Covenant proved he could make a great war movie, and Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre further showcased why he excels at action comedies. The latter film stars Jason Statham as spy Orson Fortune, who gets recruited to track down weapons technology before it's sold to an arms broker. Embarking on a worldwide mission, Orson, his team of operatives and a recruited Hollywood movie star race to stop the deal.

While not Ritchie's best film, it includes a couple of Ritchie's most frequent collaborators as well as some new faces in Operation Fortune. Operation Fortune's humor comes from how mismatched the heroic team is. Jason Statham plays a spy protagonist who displays capable fighting skills while spewing some well-timed quips. Meanwhile, Aubrey Plaza, known for her deadpan humor, fits well with Ritchie's filmmaking style. Plus, the plot features a movie star who is in way over his head during the high-stakes mission, which Josh Hartnett effectively pulls off.

10 Best Guy Ritchie Films (According to IMDb)

Guy Ritchie exploded onto the scene with hit films like Snatch while blockbusters like Sherlock Holmes and Aladdin won the director mainstream fans.

Guy Ritchie's most notably popular films are in the gangster and heist subgenres, with multiple characters and storylines converging together. While Ritchie's earliest movies that fit these criteria are still praised, RocknRolla is rarely talked about. After a Russian mobster's real estate con ends up generating millions of dollars, several members of the London criminal underworld race to get their piece of the fortune, from small-time crooks to a washed-up rock star.

RocknRolla's oddly named characters like Mr. One-Two, Mumbles and Handsome Bob would be enough to call this movie humorous, but Ritchie still incorporates plenty of chaotic shenanigans for viewers. One example is when One-Two and Mumbles hilariously try to steal a civilian's car and then fend off a knifeman in said car. There is also the entertaining subplot involving missing rock star Johnny Quid, who catches the attention of criminals who thought he was dead. Between the bumbling crook protagonists, a villainous gangster who makes nonchalant threats, and the panicky Johnny Quid, RocknRolla's characters have the well-written humor Guy Ritchie fans typically expect, yet the film itself remains an underrated gem.

8 Aladdin Was One of Ritchie's More Family-Friendly Movies

  • IMDB Rating: 6.9
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 57%
  • Watch on Disney+

Considering what Guy Ritchie specializes in, no one would expect the director to do a project for a studio as huge and family-friendly as Disney. Ritchie's involvement in the 2019 live-action remake of Aladdin came as a surprise to many. A CGI-filled fantasy musical for family audiences was unusual territory for a filmmaker who has made exceptional crime films and action comedies. Nevertheless, Aladdin remains Ritchie's highest-grossing film, making over $1 billion.

2019's Aladdin follows the same plot as the 1992 original. The titular street thief goes on a magical adventure after finding a lamp that contains an energetic genie who will grant him three wishes. While nowhere near the same quality as the animated classic, Ritchie's live-action version still features stellar production elements and colorful visuals. Aladdin is also the first film where Ritchie had to generate more kid-friendly humor, yet it was still a delight for viewers of all ages. This remake is also funny thanks to Will Smith's interpretation of Genie, who makes the character his own and not a carbon copy of what the late and beloved Robin Williams delivered in the original.

7 Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Was an Entertaining Sequel

  • IMDB Rating: 7.4
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 60%
  • Rent on Prime Video

Following the success of 2009's Sherlock Holmes, fans who enjoyed that interpretation of the world-famous detective were hopeful that Guy Ritchie and company would create a satisfying sequel. With Ritchie back in the director's chair, he brought the same magic for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The sequel focuses on Sherlock and his partner, Dr. John Watson, confronting the nefarious Professor Moriarty, who is considered Sherlock's most intelligent nemesis.

Although some fans prefer the first, A Game of Shadows is still a worthy sequel that other fans argue is better. A Game of Shadows has banter-filled dialogue shared between Sherlock and Watson, which is delivered extraordinarily by stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Amid the central mystery, incredible production design, and fantastic action sequences, there are also unexpectedly funny moments, like Sherlock unconvincingly disguising himself as a woman while on a train. Another example is his narration of a combat technique for defeating a few armed guards. After A Game of Shadows, it still shocks fans that a third film hasn't been released yet.

10 Best Action Movies Since John Wick

John Wick set the standard for action films when it was released in 2014, but since then, there have been worthy contenders to its crown.

While Guy Ritchie has experimented with the war genre before, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a slightly more comedic presentation of history. Set during World War II, the film is loosely based on the true story of Operation Postmaster, where a rag-tag soldier organization was formed to carry out a secret mission for the British Army. Formed by Winston Churchill and led by the unpredictable Gus March-Phillips, the organization seeks to change the tide of World War II and stop a fleet of German U-boats.

While an unfortunate box-office disappointment, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare works best when the cast lets loose and has fun with their roles. The film is split into two storylines as spies Mr. Heron and Marjorie Stewart get the dramatic moments, while the main group of soldiers have the funnier scenes and action sequences. The biggest scene-stealers are Henry Cavill as leader Gus March-Phillips and Alan Ritchson as Danish archer Anders Lassen. These characters and their comrades show off their comical personalities while gunning down Nazi soldiers. Notable examples include Gus sticking out his tongue while shooting, Anders waving "hello" with an ax, and Henry Golding's Freddy Alvarez showing off his expertise in explosives.

5 The Gentlemen is a Memorable Modern Film For Ritchie

10 Funniest Guy Ritchie Movies, Ranked (18)
  • IMDB Rating: 7.8
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 75%
  • Watch on Netflix

A mix of American and British humor, The Gentlemen has Guy Ritchie showcasing two different cultures in one film. In The Gentlemen, Matthew McConaughey plays American entrepreneur Mickey Pearson, who has built a remarkable and wealthy marijuana business in London. When rumors start spreading about Mickey needing money to cash out, a series of schemes, bribery, and blackmailing transpire as multiple shady criminals seek to take the business for themselves.

Out of all the films Guy Ritchie has made, The Gentlemen might have the most star-studded cast he has brought together. Alongside McConaughey, the cast features the likes of Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, and Michelle Dockery. Some characters, like Grant's and Hunnam's, have incredibly thick accents that make for hilarious line delivery. Plus, like any fun Ritchie film, the characters who want to get rich find themselves creating more mayhem, which includes causing accidental deaths and making clumsy attempts at being intimidating. The Gentlemen became a huge hit for Ritchie's career and would later spawn a 2024 Netflix series.

4 Sherlock Holmes Made The Titular Detective Fun Again

10 Funniest Guy Ritchie Movies, Ranked (24)
  • IMDB Rating: 7.6
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 70%
  • Rent on Prime Video

There have been many adaptations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's literary character Sherlock Holmes, yet Guy Ritchie's 2009 interpretation of the adventurous detective is the most entertaining. Robert Downey Jr.'s performance as Sherlock has become one of the character's best portrayals and one of the actor's best leading roles. Sherlock Holmes follows the titular detective and Dr. John Watson as they investigate a series of murders around London and search for Lord Blackwood, a killer who survived his execution.

Blending elements of a period piece with an action blockbuster, Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes always makes for an exciting movie experience. Downey Jr.'s Sherlock and Jude Law's Watson make for an endlessly enjoyable duo who give each other well-written insults and compliments. Additionally, one notable scene that everyone remembers is when Sherlock gets into a fistfight, and he explains his tactics through narration and slow-motion. The word "discombobulated" has since become a staple in meme culture. While still dramatic like other film and TV adaptations, Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes infuses comedic fun to stand out from the competition.

10 Action Movie Box Office Bombs That Are Actually Great

An action movie's weak box office performance shouldn't dictate its quality. Movies like Dredd, Edge of Tomorrow, and Scott Pilgrim are solid proof.

When Daniel Craig's James Bond films were still maintaining popularity, Guy Ritchie tried his hand at the spy genre in 2015 with The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which was based on a 1960s TV show. Starring Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. follows CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB agent Illya Kuryakin during the height of the Cold War. When a criminal organization acquires nuclear weapons and technology, Napoleon and Illya are forced to put aside their differences and work together to stop a nuclear attack.

While maintaining its dramatic stakes, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. still makes for amusing entertainment thanks to its early 1960s style, as well as its slick direction and writing by Ritchie. The film also gets pretty uproarious, with Napoleon and Illya making for a dysfunctional duo that always try to outperform one another. Their on-screen chemistry is magnetic, as are their scenes with co-star Alicia Vikander as female companion Gaby. Scenes like Napoleon and Illya's bathroom brawl and the former character enjoying a picnic meal while a gunfight is happening are some of the film's most comical moments. Sadly, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. underperformed at the box office, meaning another adventure with these characters seems unlikely.

2 Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels Introduced Everyone to Ritchie's Filmmaking And Writing

10 Funniest Guy Ritchie Movies, Ranked (33)
  • IMDB Rating: 8.1
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 75%

In 1998, Guy Ritchie made his mark in the film industry with his feature film debut, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The crime film follows Eddy and his three close friends, who place bets on a vital poker game but end up losing. With only a week to get $500,000, Eddy and his three friends decide to rob drug dealers who were already stealing from their neighbors. After these thefts, the quartet goes on the run and gains the attention of criminal gangs.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was a fascinating introduction to Guy Ritchie's stylish filmmaking and witty, repartee-filled screenplays. After making big waves in the United Kingdom, the film started gaining traction and recognition in the United States. From there, audiences grew to appreciate the quirky characters, their slick dialogue, and the ironically funny situations they get into. The story continuously takes unanticipated turns and raises the stakes, yet Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels never loses its humorous tone. Along with Ritchie, the film also introduced the world to performers like Jason Statham and Vinnie Jones, who have become occasional collaborators with the director.

1 Snatch Remains Ritchie's Best And Funniest Film

  • IMDB Rating: 8.2
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 74%
  • Rent on Prime Video

If 1998's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels started Guy Ritchie's career, then the following 2000 film, Snatch, solidified him as a director for people to look out for. Snatch is split into two storylines. One involves a gangster, Frankie Four Fingers, attempting to sell a stolen diamond, but various criminals want to try and steal it. The other revolves around a promoter named Turkish trying to persuade his new boxer, Mickey, to throw his fights, but he refuses to cooperate.

Like the film that came before, Snatch is another Guy Ritchie project involving eccentric and fast-talking characters whose separate stories overlap with one another. Every viewer has their preference about which storyline is more fun to watch, but there is no denying how intricately constructed the screenplay is. The banter is fast-paced yet satisfying, while the scenarios get more chaotically fun the longer the film goes on, with each actor getting a chance to shine. Out of everyone, however, Brad Pitt as Mickey O'Neal is the clear standout because of his physicality, offbeat personality, and indecipherable Irish accent that leaves the other characters bewildered. As one of the best heist movies of the 21st century, Snatch is still considered Ritchie's best and funniest film, and he has yet to top it.
