Benjamin of US holds off Tebogo of Botswana to win men's 4x400 relay at Paris Olympics

  • AP

Rai Benjamin has held off Letsile Tebogo on the anchor leg to give the United States men gold medal and an Olympic record in the men’s 4x400-meter relay at the Paris Games. Benjamin added this Olympic title to the one he claimed in the 400-meter hurdles a night earlier and prevented 200-meter champion Tebogo from giving Botswana another triumph over the Americans. The U.S. quartet of Christpher Bailey, Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon and Benjamin completed the four laps in 2 minutes, 54.43 seconds, nearly a second faster than the American 4x400 team ran at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Saturday’s time was just .14 seconds off the world record.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has voided the inquiry that led to Olympic bronze on the floor exercise for American gymnast Jordan Chiles. The decision opens the door for Romania’s Ana Barbosu to replace Chiles as bronze medalist. CAS ruled that the appeal by U.S. coach Cecile Landi to have .1 added to Chiles’ score that vaulted Chiles from fifth to third came outside the one-minute window allowed by the International Gymnastics Federation.

German open water athlete falls ill after swimming in the Seine River

  • By PAUL NEWBERRY - AP National Writer

German swimmer Leonie Beck says she became ill after competing in the women’s open water race at the Paris Olympics, despite assurances that the water in the Seine River was safe. Beck posted on Instagram a picture of herself giving a thumbs up but looking ill. She wrote that she “vomited 9 times yesterday + diarrhea." Paris organizers insist there's no definitive proof that swimming in the Seine has caused any illnesses. Concerns about the long-polluted waterway came to the forefront after Paris organizers decided to hold 10-kilometer open water races and swimming portions of the triathlon in the iconic river. Despite a massive cleanup project, there were disruptions to the schedule and several athletes fell ill after the triathlon.

American b-boy Victor among quarterfinalists in Olympics' first men's breaking event

  • By NOREEN NASIR - Associated Press

B-boy Victor, an American two-time world champion, was among eight dancers to advance to the quarterfinals of the Olympics first men’s breaking tournament Saturday. Victor Montalvo, the U.S. favorite, won battles against two Japanese b-boys, including b-boy Hiro10 (Hironto Ono). That win drew loud boos from the many Japanese fans in attendance. Ono gained rapturous applause after nailing power move after power move — including seemingly endless windmills and headspins — moves that typically get strong reactions from the crowd. Judges are evaluating breakers on more than just their physicality. They’re using the Trivium judging system to also grade them on technique, vocabulary, execution, musicality and originality — each accounts for 20% of the final score.

Paris Olympics embrace accessibility technology for visually impaired fans

  • By RAPHAEL LEICESTER - Associated Press

As Paris shines under the global spotlight of the Olympic Games, technological innovations are enabling people with visual impairments to take it in. A standout innovation is the Vision Pad, a tactile tablet designed to add another layer of interaction for those with visual impairments. It features a moving magnetic ball, representing the ball in play on a court or a field. The tactile feedback allows users to follow the action. Low-Vision Helmets allow users to focus in on elements. And audio announcers describe the action in vivid detail. It's part of a larger effort to make Paris more accessible.

  • By SYLVIE CORBET - Associated Press

The chocolate muffins from the bakery in the Olympic village where athletes stay have gone viral on social media. They're made alongside bread and a selection of French pastries that athletes from across the world rushed to taste. Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen has been dubbed “muffin man” after he posted a series of videos on TikTok that have accumulated millions of views. He said “it’s been an unreal experience.” About 40,000 meals are served each day to thousands of athletes in the Olympic village. A team of four bakers have produced about 600 baguettes and 900 cacao breads each day. The chocolate muffins have reached 4,000 per day.

Ukraine uses Olympic spotlight to capture global attention and fight war fatigue

  • By HANNA ARHIROVA - Associated Press

Ukraine’s Olympic fan clubhouse stands out for its somber atmosphere, with moments of silence for war victims and documentaries about the destruction. The goal is to keep Russia’s invasion of Ukraine front of mind for everyday people after more than two years of war. Global attention has shifted elsewhere, to the war in Gaza or elections in the U.S. But without that spotlight, Kyiv could find it increasingly difficult to secure more military aid from Western allies to withstand the grinding war of attrition. With the 2024 Olympics, Ukraine seized the moment to spread its message that it was seeking more than medals — it was vying for the world’s attention.

After Paris Olympics shined, Los Angeles in 2028 brings new and returning sports, plus a fresh look

  • By GRAHAM DUNBAR - AP Sports Writer

The Olympics will always have Paris. The next Summer Games go to Los Angeles in 2028. The baton will be handed from one third-time Olympic host city to another at the closing ceremony Sunday in Paris. Much will be different in four years’ time. New sports flag football and squash will make Olympic debuts. They were picked by LA organizers who are bringing back cricket and lacrosse that left the program more than 100 years ago. Paris’ unmatched historic buildings gave the city a cinematic look. LA’s Olympics will use streets that are a living history of film and television.

No-car Games: Los Angeles Olympic venues will only be accessible by public transportation

  • By JENNA FRYER - AP National Writer

The one question Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is repeatedly asked about before her city hosts the 2028 Summer Olympics is traffic. Bass has declared it will be the “no-car games” and venues will only be accessible by public transportation. It will take more than 3,000 buses and LA 2028 organizers will need to bring them in from all over the country. Additionally, Bass wants to collaborate with major Los Angeles businesses to encourage employees to work remotely during a 17-day period to reduce the number of cars on the roads. Bass will receive the Olympic flag from Paris' mayor during Sunday's closing ceremony.

Cringy moves and a white b-girl's durag prompt questions about Olympic breaking's authenticity

  • By NOREEN NASIR - Associated Press

From the Australian b-girl with the meme-worthy “kangaroo” dance move to the silver-medal winning Lithuanian in a durag, breaking’s Olympic debut had a few moments that raised questions from viewers about whether the essence of the hip-hop art form was captured at the Paris Games. Rachael Gunn, or “b-girl Raygun,” a 36-year-old professor from Sydney, Australia, quickly achieved internet fame, but not necessarily for Olympic-level skill. Competing against some b-girls half her age, she was swept out of the round-robin stage without earning a single point, and her unconventional moves landed flat while failing to match the skill level of her foes.

2024 Olympics schedule Aug. 11: US women go for basketball gold, closing ceremony

  • By JEROME PUGMIRE - AP Sports Writer

Sunday is the final day for the Paris Olympics. The day will end with the closing ceremony at Stade de France, but 14 gold medals will be decided first. It begins with the women’s marathon in the morning and continues with the men’s handball final between Denmark and Germany. The women’s volleyball final sees the Americans defending their title against first-time finalist Italy. Competition concludes with host France facing the U.S. in the women’s basketball final. The Americans are trying to become the first team — in any sport — to win eight consecutive Olympic gold medals, breaking a tie with the U.S. men’s program that won seven in a row from 1936-68.

Meet Nacer Zorgani, the vision-impaired Para-judo athlete who doubles as boxing’s Olympic voice

  • By TOM NOUVIAN and JOHN LEICESTER - Associated Press

A visually impaired Para-judo athlete is captivating crowds at the Paris 2024 Olympics as a boxing announcer. Despite his blindness, Nacer Zorgani’s deep voice commands the attention of thousands of spectators at boxing events. Many are unaware of his disability. He seamlessly transitions between his roles as a judo competitor by day and a boxing announcer by night. He is training for the Paralympics in Paris that start later this month. His journey was inspired by a 2017 title fight between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko. Volunteers are helping him at the Olympics by acting as his eyes. That demonstrates how small adjustments can empower people with disabilities to be included in major events.

Cleaning up the Seine: the Olympics boosts a Parisian dream, but it's still far from fully achieved

  • By SYLVIE CORBET - Associated Press

French authorities vow that cleanup efforts on the Seine River will allow Parisians to finally open up as a summertime swim spot. They also hope a cleaner river revitalizes the overall environment. The work that went into tackling water quality concerns may be the Games’ biggest legacy for the river snaking through the French capital and arguably for Paris itself. French President Emmanuel Macron claimed victory following the Olympic triathlon tests. But an expert at an environmental group noted that recent efforts are still insufficient to guarantee clean waters. Still, the idea of swimming in the Paris landmark is irresistible to many.

Beau Hossler shot a 10-under 60 on Friday in the rain-delayed Wyndham Championship, squandering a chance for a sub-60 round with pars on the last three holes at soft and vulnerable Sedgefield Country Club. Hossler had a two-stroke lead over Billy Horschel in the tournament that started a day late after heavy rain and wind from Tropical Storm Debby washed out play Thursday. Play also was delayed Friday, with Horschel among the many afternoon starters unable to finish the round because of darkness. He had two holes left. With players allowed to lift, clean and place their golf balls in the fairways, Hossler was 6 under after a tap-in eagle on the par-5 fifth and birdied the par-4 eighth in a front-nine 28.

The CrossFit Games have resumed a day after a competitor died after going underwater and not resurfacing during a swimming event in a Texas lake. He was pronounced dead after his body was recovered from a Fort Worth lake Thursday. The Tarrant County medical examiner has not yet listed Dukic’s cause of death. The CrossFit website says the mission of the games is to “find the fittest athletes in the world.”

Richmond up next as NASCAR returns from its Olympic break for final 4 races of regular season

NASCAR returns from its Olympic break this weekend. Sunday night’s Cup race at Richmond begins a four-race pre-playoff sprint. Chris Buescher can take solace in the fact that this upcoming part of the schedule was so good to him last year. Buescher was winless in 2023 entering the second race at Richmond, but he prevailed in that one. Then he won again the following week at Michigan. He added a third victory in under a month at Daytona in late August. Buescher is again without a victory this year entering Richmond. He's third in the standings among winless drivers. In other words, squarely on the playoff bubble.
